Green Energy

Green energy is commonly associated with such things as wind turbines and solar panels. However, plenty of newer alternatives are always being explored. Here are a few examples of more recent interests to the scientific realm:

•Artificial leaves and trees – Because leaves are so excellent at converting sunlight into energy, scientists are working hard to mimic the process of photosynthesis.

•The Anaconda project – This green energy is being developed at the University of Southampton. It involves having waves push a growing bulge along an underwater tube to the end point of it spinning an electricity-generating turbine.

•Energy islands – The concept behind these explorations involve generating electricity from the temperature differences between colder deep waters and warmer surface waters. The warmer water is used to create steam which produces energy in turn. Cold water can also condense the aforementioned steam into desalinated water.

•VIVACE – The acronym stands for Vortex Induced Vibrations for Aquatic Clean Energy. This green energy source was actually inspired by the movement of fish. It involves the use of cylindrical rods to capture the energy of ocean and river currents.
